Migraines

Many food items can trigger migraines. I would suggest keeping a food journal and looking back at the journal to see what you eat on the days of migraines.

Some known food triggers for migraines are:
Chocolate, cheese, cows milk, citrus, beer, wine (especially red wine) and coffee and soda (SAY No to Diet soda). Gluten (I gave a list of gluten items), hard cheese, aspartame (really bad stuff) and refined foods.

Often headaches can be triggered by dehydration. Remember to drink purified water aim for 60 ounces in a day more if you are over 120 pounds. Try to drink 4 ounces every hour to stay hydrated. You can also count your herbal decaf teas and coconut water in the 60 ounces. So drink water throughout the day…..

There are mixed opinions on  coffee some information reports that it might help were others claim it is a cause.  I would limit the coffee just to be safe.

Lack of sleep is another cause. Trying to get 8 hours of sleep is very important. Sleep in total darkness. If sleep is an issue that is another topic but that could also be causing migraines. One thing to try is an epsom salt bath at night to relax you. And a cup of decaf sleepy time tea.

Eating three meals and two snack a day is so important to keeping your blood sugar balanced. Long periods of time between meals or snacks can be a cause of migraines. So again try to eat throughout the day.

For the woman on birth control pill this can also be a cause of migraines. Some birth control pills have been known to cause migraines you may want to check with your health care physician to see if you could try a different brand if you think that could be the cause.

Try the elimination diet to see if that helps I can send that information out if your are interested.
Spearmint tea has been helpful for some people try that instead of the NSAIDS (advil etc.)

Magnesium deficiency has also been a well known cause. Supplementing with magnesium could help Magnesium glycinate is the form I would recommend. I would start with Magnesium Glycinate 400 mg a day.  Magnesium helps with muscle relaxation. Epsom Salt baths are another great way to get magnesium. Be careful if you are having a migraine do not want you passing out in the tub.

STRESS is a really big cause of migraines so de-stress as much as possible. Getting rid of the stress will also help with other health issues in so many ways.Try Yoga and meditation.
Hormones and menstruation also a cause.

Put an ice pack on your forehead when headache strikes it may help.

Regular aerobic exercise can reduce the frequency and intensity of migraine episodes.

Nutrition:
Avoid food allergens as mentioned above.
Essential fatty acids (1,500 mg a day) may be helpful.

Supplementing with fish oil (a EFA) or flaxseed oil (for men I would not use flaxseed oil has been shown in case studies to cause prostate problems but flaxseed ground is okay).
Omega-3 oils (EPA and DHA average 14 g a day) I believe it is better to get your nutrition from food so supplements are a second option. You should always check with a professional before supplementing.

Herbs: Ginger tea has been shown to help. Remember we talked about the importance of ginger for so many other health benefits. Can buy green tea with organic ginger at Whole Foods or you can make your own. I buy the ginger root and put in warm water and also add ginger to smoothies.

I hope this information is helpful to those of you experiencing migraines. There are other health issues that can cause migraines. So listen to your body it could be telling you something.
